World Book Day!

Thursday 2nd March 2017

To celebrate World Book Day we will be having lots of special reading events and activities taking place throughout the day.

Fancy Dress Competition!

Please dress up as your favourite character from a book. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed from each class!

50p Chill with a Book!

All children will be able to buy an ice-lolly for 50p to enjoy whilst reading a book. The profit from all money raised will go towards paying for magazine subscriptions for the school library.

Book Swap!

All pupils will need to bring in a book that they are willing to swap with other children in their class. This will result in all children having a new book to read for FREE!!! Please can all children bring their book in to swap by Wednesday 1st March.

Free £1 Book Token!

When you get your book token, all you need to do is to take it to your local bookshop and swap it for one of these ten (exclusive, new and completely free) £1 World Book Day books! Or, if you’d prefer, you can use your book token to get £1 off any full price book instead!

Your child may wish to keep their token to spend at our book fair, which is on the 23rd and 24th March.

SPELLING COMPETITION

The School Council have organised a spelling competition for children in school to take part in . There will be spelling sheets on sale starting next week priced 20p. Children will have a few weeks to learn the spelling words before being tested in school. There will be certificates and prizes available for the winning pupils in each phase and then a grand final Spelling Bee in the hall for all class winners. The age categories will be:

FS2

Year One

Year two

Year 3 / 4

Year 5 / 6

We hope you will support your child in entering this competition and learning the words to enable them to possibly be the Arboretum Spelling Champion!

AROUND THE WORLD

This week, all our children spent 2 days going “Around the World”. Each classroom was a different country, and the children visited them in turn to find out more about that country and the people who live there. At lunch time they tried foods from different countries. During the week, the children have been encouraged to think about 2 BIG QUESTIONS:

Why is it important to learn about people who live in different places?
What’s great about being different?

"My favourite country is China. I like going on the aeroplane." Diana

“I value other countries and people. You should do that too.” Ansh

"I liked clicking the castanets in Spain." Mustafa Khan

You should respect everyone no matter if they are black or white. There is no better you than the you that you are” Usmaan

It has been fantastic because we learned about lots of different people and countries. It has helped me to look at the world differently.” Eisha

“It doesn’t matter if you are black or white or if you are big or small. What matters is what you are like as a person” Asiya

"My favourite country is Spain because I can speak Spanish. Hola!" Elyes

"I liked Egypt because of the pyramids." Iman

Difference doesn’t matter. We all have the same feelings. We can be happy or sad” Laura
