Mathematics FS1



Children are given the opportunity to:


  • Recite numbers in order to 10: singing rhymes, playing games, numbers in the environment, adult led activities.

  • Match numeral and quantity correctly.

  • Represent numbers using fingers, marks on paper or pictures.

  • Compare two groups of objects.


Through detailed planning stimulus is provided to motivate children to show curiosity in numbers, to ask questions and make comments. Adults present simple number problems to engage and

challenge the children.

Shape, space and measure


 Opportunities are provided for children to:


  • Play with shapes, to create pictures and make arrangements with shapes.

  • Identify shapes within the environment.

  • Talk about the shapes of everyday objects, ‘round’, ‘tall’.


Through adult led activities and intervention children use positional language; children explore length, weight and capacity through play based experiences.
