Music - KS2 - Year 5 / 6

Pupils in Years 5 and 6 participate in an annual end of year performance. All children are involved, particularly in the singing. “Pupils should be taught to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control.” (National Curriculum in England, Music programmes of study)

Year 5/6 pupils are also given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument (brass). Through this opportunity they are exposed to:

  • play(ing) and perform(ing) in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression.

  • listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory

  • use and understand staff and other musical notations

  • appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians.

In addition to this KS1 and KS2 pupils have a singing assembly every week in which they learn the songs for collective worship.

  • Pupils are also given the opportunity to join the choir: the choir were invited to perform at the intu centre and, more recently, performed The Wizard of Oz to children, staff and parents.
