Protected Characteristics
Teaching Equality in the Arboretum Curriculum
At Arboretum Primary school, we are privileged to work in a catchment which is multi-cultural and diverse. This cultural richness is to be celebrated as different cultures, talents and experiences provide an opportunity for us all to learn from each other and provides the perfect setting to teach diversity and inclusivity.
We take seriously our responsibility to teach future generations to eliminate discrimination and promote equality and kindness in all our relationships. This responsibility is stated in the Equality Act of 2010 which covers those protected characteristics as stated below:
age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- marriage or civil partnership
- pregnancy and maternity
- race
- religion or belief
- sex
- sexual orientation
Pupils at Arboretum Primary School are taught about these Protected Characteristics across all curriculum areas. Our PSHE/Personal development teaching is undertaken using Jigsaw. Their materials plus other curriculum teaching feature in these year group overviews.
When planning personal development teaching, we are sensitive to our community. Not all protected characteristics will be taught in every year group.
Our curriculum ensures children develop age-appropriate knowledge and understanding during their time at the school.
