Phonics - Read Write Inc
Arboretum follows the RWInc phonics programme. We chose RWInc because we want every child to have the skills and knowledge to become confident readers. This confidence will then inspire a love of reading, and reading is the key to learning.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” — Dr. Seuss
The journey starts in Nursery with lots of listening games, rhymes, songs and stories. This leads on to the introduction of pictures and sounds.
This journey continues through Reception and the aim is that children will finish the programme some time in Year 2.
Children are assessed every half term by an ‘assessment team’ and placed in a group according to their ability. Children that are finding reading tricky are supported with additional 1-1 intervention.
Children take home ‘Book bag books’, these are the stories that the children have read in school. These books match the children’s phonic knowledge and when they bring them home they should be able to read them with fluency and expression and to answer questions about the story. It is important that the children read the story more than once to develop and practise their skills.
